The History of Masjid Muhammad
Oh humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may get to know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.
Al- Hujurat 13
Masjid Muhammad started under the teachings of the Nation of Islam (NOI) in 1968. With the death of NOI leader, the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, in 1975, Masjid Muhammad, along with half a million African American Muslims, transitioned to the universally accepted practice of Al-Islam.
Under its new leader, Imam Warith Deen Muhammad, the national organization was renamed the Community of Al-Islam in the West. Thus, local temples became Masjids, and members began to follow the commands of the Qur’an and conduct of the Sunnah (traditions and model) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Masjid Muhammad, once located on Jones St., in Jackson, Mississippi, a majority Black city, evolved to become a center for the worship of Allah by all Muslims, regardless of race or national origin. While honoring its uniquely African American roots, our congregation consists of believers from all over the Muslim world who find their homes in Jackson, Mississippi.

“The semblance of those who spend their wealth in the Way of Allah SWT is as the likeness of a grain of corn, which grows seven ears and each ear has a hundred grains. Allah SWT gives manifold increase to whomever He pleases. Allah SWT is All-Sufficient, All-Knowing.”
